Failure on the Way to Something Better - Work It Daily

Disappointment while in transit to Something Better - Work It Daily Over the span of talking fruitful experts in media outlets, a few have said sooner or later right off the bat in their vocations, they were told, On the off chance that you can accomplish something different, do it. Meaning, your odds of getting through and getting by at being a maker, executive, author, on-screen character, humorist, artist, outfit planner, supervisor, screenwriter, studio division president, and so forth., are so thin and the street there so troublesome you ought to go another course on the off chance that you can. How's that for consolation? Obviously, a considerable lot of the individuals I've met didn't tune in to that counsel. Some really did tune in, and in this manner changed course away from one of those probably nothing dream vocations toward something with better chances. Also, some attempted and attempted to turn into an entertainer or chief or vocalist, and so forth., and fizzled. Believe it or not. They never made progress in their fantasy work, the one they wanted as children while extinguishing the candles on each birthday cake and worked so perseveringly at for a considerable length of time. I was contemplating that while I was tuning in to Andy Levine, the prime supporter of Sixthman, being met on the NPR appear, From Scratch. I had first gotten mindful of Sixthman when I did this post on three things we can gain from Kid Rock and Snoop Dog. One of the exercises was to expand and the model I'd given was the voyage Kid Rock was on at that point, called the Chillin' the Most journey. Child and supporting acts with a comparable segment were on board performing for and spending time with 100s of their most energetic fans. It wasn't until after I put the post up and the remarks began abounding in that I understood it wasn't Kid Rock's journey. There was an organization behind it which brings name acts onto boats to perform for, and collaborate with, their fans. Truly, he was really going on board transport for a few days with fans ready to spend oodles of cash to have that semi-cozy and completely once in a blue moon fan understanding. Splendid, I thought at that point. An organization called Sixthman. While I was tuning in to the Andy Levine talk with, two things struck me: one was the manner by which satisfied he was by doing these occasions. He considers these excursions sacrosanct encounters for the visitors and obviously savors giving that experience to the two fans and specialists, just as making an organization culture comprised of individuals with a comparable zealous mentality toward what they give. The other was that this vocation was his reassurance after not having made it as an entertainer. Since early on, Andy adored music. He rehearsed guitar for a considerable length of time, until his fingers drained. Be that as it may, as he told the questioner, the band he was in was so disinterested by his playing they didn't plug him into the sound framework when they played. He didn't understand this for longer than a year. He presently comprehends that they kept him in the band since he booked the entirety of their shows and made the entirety of the strategic courses of action. So however it must've been profoundly excruciating to surrender his fantasies about being an entertainer, particularly in such a possibly mortifying way (contingent on how he discovered and what attitude he was in at that point), the adoration for music converged with his aptitudes as a chief were a characteristic fit for a vocation he currently has semi strict commitment to. Furthermore, which is giving such a great amount of satisfaction to such a significant number of individuals. Another case of disappointment being a blessing is the thing that has occurred with Marc Maron and the WTF Podcast, of which I am a crazy fan. (Furthermore, you showbiz competitors/amateurs ought to be as well - start here or here. You'll be snared, as well.) His isn't an account of disappointment, as such, as he is as yet a standup comic. Be that as it may, throughout the years, as the funnies he thought of got openings and went onto different things (TV sitcoms, television shows, film vocations, SNL fame), he didn't have a major break. He kept on performing at a specific level, yet was not removed from standup by something different. It was that absence of being attracted away to a busier, increasingly prosperous showbiz vocation that prompted his making of the WTF digital broadcast, where he talks with stand-ups, previous stand-ups, and other parody experts about their profession ways, the great and the awful, their specialty and procedures, and so on. It's a virtuoso show and I generally pick up something. What's more, with respect to Marc, because of the prevalence of the show, he is really getting other showbiz openings. In any case, he likewise talks about the show as something more significant and fulfilling than a venturing stone while in transit to something else. It takes care of him in a manner no other showbiz opportunity could, regardless of how much cash was joined. For myself, I composed screenplays for a long time. Furthermore, a novel, as well. I got consideration from them, once in a while close-yet no-stogie consideration, yet no cash. Furthermore, my normal everyday employment included recruiting. Parts and heaps of recruiting. I didn't get through recorded as a hard copy fiction and I have no enthusiasm for it any longer, however the normal everyday employment and the narrating converged in a manner that for both individual and expert reasons is ideal for me. I work one-on-one with customers doing vocation counseling and composing focused on continue and profiles, and through this site, I help individuals who need to make it in showbiz make sense of the best way to their ideal result (just as helping them make sense of on the off chance that it truly is the privilege wanted result for them). So in the event that you are rehearsing until your fingers drain and still the band isn't connecting you, or on the off chance that you are doing 250 stand-up dates a year and still not getting any footing with the showbiz muckety-sludges, or in the event that you are composing books or screenplays that despite everything don't bring about a check, don't surrender. Not exclusively is it not the apocalypse; it might simply be there is something different, something better and perhaps inconceivable now, out there for you. Jenny Yerrick Martin, author of YourIndustryInsider.com, has amassed 20+ years as a media outlet proficient including right around 15 as a recruiting official and five as a lifelong expert. Survey reveals people think Siri and Alexa are female tech leaders

Overview uncovers individuals think Siri and Alexa are female tech pioneers Study uncovers individuals think Siri and Alexa are female tech pioneers Another LivePerson survey asked American customers a basic inquiry: Name a pioneer in technology. When it came naming popular male pioneers, most of respondents had no difficult ticking off names. About half of purchasers could effectively name a renowned male tech pioneer with the top decisions being Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, or Mark Zuckerberg. But when it came to naming a lady in a similar industry, respondents experienced a mental blackout. Just 8.3% of the 1,000 American buyers reviewed said they could name a lady chief in innovation. What's more, out of that bunch of individuals, no one but 4% could really create a name. The issue: A fourth of them named virtual assistants Siri and Alexa.Respondents could name A.I. before they could name female tech leadersThat's right, there are individuals among us who think Siri and Alexa - the names of misleadingly fueled clerical specialists who live in our gadgets and don't sit in the corner office - are the most remarkable female tech pioneers in America. This is a discouraging update that the portrayal of genuine ladies in innovation is as yet deficient. You can't be what you can't see, and innovation has truly been where ladies are not found in top positions. Just 9% of Silicon Valley officials are ladies, one 2014 report found. While ladies make up practically 50% of the work showcase, just about 24% of them are in science, innovation, designing, and math jobs.As Silicon Valley organizations like Facebook face exposure relations debacles over the abuse of client information, the organization might need to put its Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg in the spotlight. The review found that despite the fact that the respondents couldn't name ladies in top occupations, they would believe tech organizations more in the event that they were there. Turns out, ladies in power move open trust in tech items. Most of respondents said they would confide in tech goliaths more on the off chance that they realized th ese organizations were being led by a lady.

Are You Martyring Your Dreams

Are you martyring your dreams? Photo courtesy of Rowanhillâ€"“Spring Path”. “I never want to work for a mean boss, like you, mom,” a client’s daughter said.  Following the conversation with her daughter, she asked me how I ended up in career coaching. I told her that I identified with her daughter because my own parents’ careers and their attitudes about work disenchanted me in my childhood and adolescence. I did not want to be held down and under-appreciated by management, but I also did not want to be management, who I thought was some evil, power-hungry scrooge. This made it really tough to envision a future where I could be fulfilled, paid well, and happy. I later realized that there were, in fact, some people who followed a career path that they loved and got paid well. But there were far too few. Wondering why, I sought to understand how the happy, successful people got where they were. Why did it seem so easy for some people? One major factor stuck out to me. The people who pursued professional happiness did so because they believed that it was possible for them. What a concept. I’ve been a professional career coach for eight years now. I have helped my clients confront belief systems that hold them back. I have had many clients who were taught that work cannot be fun and pay the bills. I’ve even had bosses who believed that pursuing a profession based on passion is “idealistic,” or in other words, unrealistic. I see parents all the time explain to their children that they had to give up their dream so that they could provide for their families. [Click to tweet: Are you martyring your dreams? http://ctt.ec/FTcS4] Now that I have kids of my own, I’m very careful to consider what I teach them about work, income, and choosing a vocation. I don’t want my kids to feel like they are a reason that I had to sacrifice my dreams and spend my time working. I want them to feel exhilarated about the possibilities and potential for the future using their God given talents. I want them to feel like they can have it all â€" everything that is important to them can be possible. I don’t want anyone to ever try to convince them otherwise. I want them to know that mommy wants to do some really important things to help other people.  And I want them to be inspired and feel a part of that. In addition, I want other moms to know that their choices and commitments do not have to limit them. I mean, we all have limits to our time, but more than ever before in the history of the world, there are tremendous solutions available to get more done with less time. A 2015 career manifesto for you and me:   I will remain open to what is possible, even if I’m not sure it is. I will make decisions based on what I want most, not based on fear or skepticism. Instead of saying why me, I will say why not me? I will operate as though the world supports me and wants me to be successful, and I will look for evidence of this everywhere. Imagine de John Lennon. The Beatles. Imagine there ´s no heaven, it ´s easy if you try…. 0 comments on “Are you martyring your dreams?” Pingback: Career Coaching, Personal Branding, Résumés, Social Media Strategy for Career & Income Optimization » Your Attitudes About Work Can Shape the Career Path of Others

Writing About My Internship at a Food Bank on a Resume

Writing About My Internship at a Food Bank on a ResumeWriting about my internship with a food bank on a resume is one of the most difficult things to do in the world. This type of experience can be very uplifting, but it is also very challenging. It requires some extra effort on your part, and you may have to learn some things that are not taught in college.I remember the first time I sat down to write about my internship. I had been working as a receptionist, and I was basically on call all day. I wasn't making enough money to get a real college education, so I decided to go out and get a great job. However, because I had to work the graveyard shift, I had to take a job washing dishes at the restaurant down the street. At first, this seemed like a wonderful opportunity. I was getting paid much less than the minimum wage for a cook, so it seemed like a good choice. The only problem was that I had a great atmosphere for a waitress. I loved being able to make people happy. And there was nothing wrong with washing dishes. People loved it.However, it soon became clear that this job wasn't going to last very long. I was very tired, and the pay was very low. Then I met my boss at the restaurant, and he told me that I was going to be moving to another job next week.'Where are you going to go?' was his exact words. He said that if I wanted to be a professional server in the restaurant industry, I would have to move to Florida. But, he also gave me this piece of advice: 'If you go to Florida, you might never come back.'I wrote about my internship with a food bank on a resume about this guy's comment. When I started applying for jobs, my interviewer really liked the story. However, I still wasn't satisfied with it. I could have used more detail, but I think I went overboard with how I portrayed the story.I finally decided to write a new version of the resume that included the story. I am really proud of this write-up, and it helped me land my dream job as a server at the b est restaurant in town.

Why You Shouldnt Overcome Your Fear

Why You Shouldn’t Overcome Your Fear Summary A pal of mine said this just lately: “Excuses are worry, masquerading as logic” When you're employed with bold professionals looking to advance their careers, you run up against this so much. And, whilst you might assume you realize what worry looks, feels and tastes like, it’s fairly clever at sneaking in and masking itself. Because “worry” is â€" as a rule â€" at the root of why something isn’t occurring with the general public we work with. It often sounds like this: “I can’t because…” So, here’s slightly problem I even have for you. The subsequent time you are feeling that statement on the brink of come out of your mouth. Flip it around and say: “I HAVE TO as a result of…” Think about that for a minute. If what you need is really important, it’s not about overcoming the concern as a lot as replacing it with a fair bigger concern. Then, the worry becomes motivation. “I can’t as a result of” = permission to remain right the place you're “I have to as a result of” = REQUIRES you taking motion. It’s not an possibility to stay nonetheless. Don’t overcome your fear Instead, exchange it with one that fuels you. Employment tribunals What you need to know

Employment tribunals What you need to know by Amber Rolfe Not sure what an employment tribunal is? If you’re having a dispute at work that can’t be resolved, you might decide to take your complaint to an employment tribunal. But if you’re not familiar with what it involves, submitting a claim and attending a hearing can be a daunting prospect. We’ve already covered why employment law exists, but here’s what to do if you think it’s not being adhered to:What is an employment tribunal? Employment tribunals are independent public bodies who resolve disagreements or disputes between employees and employers. They could deal with a range of employment issues, from unfair dismissal, discrimination, and bullying, through to redundancy payment or wage disputes.Unfair dismissal versus redundancyContract of employment â€" key terms explained and your rightsHow can I make an employment tribunal claim? If you have a problem at work that isn’t being solved through other methods (e.g. by submitting a grievance), you might need to consider taking your case to an employment tribunal. To start your claim, you’ll need to fill out the ET1 form on GOV.UK.This should include a detailed account (written in numbered paragraphs) of your complaint, covering events in order of when they happened. However, before you proceed, remember that employment tribunal claims are taken extremely seriously by employers. So always ensure that you consult a representative or advisor first, to discuss your claim in more detail before pursuing.  What do I need to do before the employment tribunal? A preliminary hearing will usually take place beforehand, which will give both parties an idea when they’ll be expected to attend the tribunal, and how long it will last. This will also provide the opportunity for the employer to discuss a potential settlement with the employee. If an agreement is reached, the employment tribunal won’t go ahead. If not, you will need to prepare:Any relevant paperwork (e.g. employment contract, pays lips, pension scheme details, or notes from meetings)Witness details and statementsNotes to help you present your caseWhat happens at an employment tribunal? Employment tribunals are usually held in a large room in an office building, rather than in a formal court room. Here’s a breakdown on some of the steps that might take place:When you arrive â€" you’ll be asked to sign in and wait in the appropriate waiting room (the claimant’s room). You’ll then be asked to hand over any documents you’ve brought with you. To allow time for this, you should always aim to get there at least half an hour before the hearing is due to start. In the tribunal room â€" there will usually be a tribunal panel of three people, or one employment judge (who will run the hearing) sitting at a slightly raised desk. You’ll be seated in front of them, with witnesses and members of the public located at the back of the room.During the tribunal â€" the panel members will start by introducing themselves , and the judge will decide which side goes first. Each party will be required to read out their witness statements and be cross-examined by the employee, employer, or the allocated representative. After the evidence has been heard â€" you may be asked to make a closing submission, giving you the opportunity to sum up your claim and reiterate the evidence and legal arguments that have been given. The tribunal panel will make a decision â€" this will either happen on the day, or at a later date. If you’re given an answer that day, the panel will take some time away from the room to discuss it beforehand. Otherwise, the decision will be sent to you in writing.  What should I wear to an employment tribunal? Whilst an employment tribunal isn’t as formal as a court hearing, you should always aim to dress as smartly as possible.  Will there be costs? From July 2016, employment tribunal charges were dropped, meaning you’ll no longer have to pay anything to make a claim. If you had an emp loyment tribunal before July 2013, you may also be able to claim back the fees you paid.To find out how, visit GOV.UK.  Can I bring anyone with me? If you have a representative, they’ll usually prepare your case in advance, and will come to the hearing with you. However, you’ll still need to speak when giving your evidence. You’ll also be able to bring friends and family to support you, but they will be required to remain quiet, and sit in the allocated space at the back of the room. What happens after the employment tribunal? What happens after the employment tribunal depends on the decision the employment judge makes. If you win your tribunal case â€" the sum will be decided upon and ordered by the employment judge, and your employer will have to pay this to you or your representative by a set date. However, the employer might choose to apply for a review or appeal against this decision. If this happens, your claim may be referred to a higher court (the employment appeal tribuna l), which is likely to extend the length of your case.If you lose your tribunal case â€" you may be able to request for the claim to be reviewed, or appeal against the decision â€" but this is usually only an option if there was a legal problem with your case.If you have a representative, they’ll be able to provide guidance on whether this is a good idea. If not, you may need to consult a solicitor for specialist advice on the matter. The Equality Act: What you need to knowWhere should I go for employment tribunal advice? Think Like a Pilot to Learn From Mistakes at Work - The Muse

Adopt the thought process of a Pilot to Learn From Mistakes at Work - The Muse Adopt the thought process of a Pilot to Learn From Mistakes at Work When Ofir Paldi entered the esteemed Israeli Air Force Flight Academy at age 18, he got guidelines that astonished him. All anybody appeared to need him to discuss were the slip-ups he was making. You're in an extremely serious spot. You have the greatest inspiration to succeed and all you need to do constantly is to be the best and dazzle everybody around you, he says. What's more, step by step the main thing you are required [to do] is to talk about the mix-ups you [made]. After each flight, they'd question, covering what they realized, what they could've improved (and would attempt to improve next time), and what they did well that they needed to make sure to do once more. You can plunk down… 100 pilots together in one room-it's the spot with the most conscience on the planet and you can at present talk about your missteps and you see everyone stand up to share, he says, from the most youthful pilot as far as possible up to the authority. You can plunk down… 100 pilots together in one room-it's the spot with the most self image on the planet and you can at present talk about your errors and you see everyone hold up. Ofir Paldi At the point when he left the aviation based armed forces after right around nine years as a pilot he turned into a business person, and his present business, Shamaym, was roused by the sort of preparing he got there. The organization, which as of late moved from Tel Aviv to Boston, works with associations to actualize a questioning based learning model. To lay it out plainly, they assist groups with embracing a culture where it's alright as well as basic to contemplate botches so as to make everybody and the association better. A great many people need to learn, in principle, however you generally have another gathering and another undertaking and another email, and we simply don't discover an opportunity to stop and reflect, Paldi says. Nonetheless, he demands that if pilots in uber high-stress jobs can admit to mistakes to improve their exhibition, anybody can. You don't need to recruit Shamaym to figure out how to gain from your mix-ups. Here's the means by which you can utilize this way to deal with develop in your job and profession. Reward: You get the opportunity to claim to be a pilot simultaneously. Photograph of Ofir Paldi, previous pilot and originator and CEO of Shamaym, civility of Ofir Paldi. Stage 1: Take Personal Responsibility for Your Learning A great deal changes when you make the progress from understudy to representative. Maybe most importantly, it's not, at this point anybody's express or sole activity to instruct you. You may have strong managers or kind coaches who give you the general tour and help you develop, however your everyday learning is for the most part in your own hands. Paldi stresses that one of the primary principles of the methodology he's obtained from the aviation based armed forces is assuming individual liability. At the point when you finish an undertaking, you are the person who's mindful to gain from it, and you can hardly wait or believe that somebody will come and show you, he says. At the point when you finish an errand, you are the person who's capable to gain from it, and you can hardly wait or imagine that somebody will come and educate you. Ofir Paldi That is the reason you can just question yourself. At the point when you go over what worked out positively and what didn't, center around what you did and what botches you made, not what your chief, collaborators, customers, or any other individual did. As we talked on the telephone, Paldi utilized our meeting for instance to effectively express the idea. Allows simply state that you didn't get all the data you required from the call. So you can never talk about me and for what reason didn't you gain from me, he says. You generally take a gander at yourself-what I, Stav, could have improved in this call or the groundwork for this bring so as to get more data. You can only with significant effort change what others are doing, yet you can change what you're doing. Stage 2: Figure Out What Your Flights Are So as to try the questioning system, you need to make sense of which repeating and significant errand you need to concentrate on. Noticeable all around compel, it's quite self-evident: flights. Paldi and different pilots he prepared with would experience their errors and victories after each flight. While you most likely carry out your responsibility at a lower height, you without a doubt have obligations you rehash much of the time that are vital to your job. Consider those your flights. For instance, a columnist's flights may be directing meetings, composing articles, reality checking, and experiencing amendment forms with their editors, while somebody in deals should seriously think about their trips to make customer calls, making pitch decks, giving introductions, and shepherding bargains through agreements to close. Everybody's flights will be unique. Make sense of what yours are and pick one sort to begin with that you need to deal with improving. Stage 3: Conduct Short and Simple Debriefs Begin questioning with yourself after each flight. Spend only a couple of moments each time asking yourself: What worked out positively? What didn't go as well as possible or ought to have? What would i be able to improve whenever around? Choose the a few fundamental things that you want to improve or that you completely nailed and need to rehash. In case you're attempting to consider yourself responsible, consider keeping a log of your questions and alluding to it before each flight. What's more, in the event that you work in a domain where you're talking about and defining development objectives with your administrator, take a stab at consolidating what you're finding in your questions into this conventional discussion to help keep yourself on target. The most significant thing here isn't to hold up until something turns out badly to begin questioning. Make it part of your routine in any event, when things are chugging along pretty easily. That way, you cause learning a propensity and you'll to have the option to improve and develop gradually and reliably. You might even keep away from an awful disaster in any case, however regardless of whether it occurs, when it does you'll be knowledgeable in the act of dismantling what turned out badly and guaranteeing you improve whenever. Stage 4: Decide What You'll Repeat or Do Differently (and Be Specific) Paldi's greatest tip about those fast questioning, or learning, meetings is to be very explicit and concentrate noteworthy takeaways. In our human instinct, when we get the hang of something we state, 'OK, we'll improve or we'll do it another way,' Paldi says. Yet, it's insufficient. In our human instinct, when we get the hang of something we state, 'OK, we'll improve or we'll do it any other way.' But it's insufficient. Ofir Paldi Returning to the case of our meeting, it wouldn't be sufficient for me to presume that I didn't get enough foundation data. Rather, I'd need to think of the particular inquiries I ought to have posed to attempt to get the material I was absent. You don't need to be a pilot to work like one. Simply recall that it can require some investment to get happy with being so ruthlessly legitimate (with yourself or others) about the missteps you're making. Paldi lets it be known took two or three months before he had the option to question the manner in which his aviation based armed forces educators needed him to. Regardless of whether toward the starting it's somewhat hard, I feel that perhaps the greatest bit of leeway you can take to the business world is your capacity to...constantly learn and improve without anyone else and expand your latent capacity, Paldi says. Since it's a serious world out there, it's an extraordinary world. Nobody will be there to do it for you, so your upper hand would be in the event that you could do it without anyone else.

Top 10 Ways to Impress in an Interview

Top 10 Ways to Impress in an Interview Your CV  may land you an interview, but its how you come across in the interview process that will really determine whether you land the role or not. The interview is your chance to really sell yourself and let your personality shine through. Its important to be memorable, so be sure to answer in a way that will make you stand out from the crowd and demonstrate that you are a cut above the rest. On top of providing well thought out responses to anything you may be asked, its also essential for you to present yourself smartly and confidently. Everything from the way you dress on the day, to the body language  you use, will contribute to the impression you give off. To be sure that you make the  best first impression possible at an interview, here are 10 tips that you should follow, courtesy of Armstrong Appointments. 1. Be prepared: Its important that you have done your homework before attending the interview, so make sure you research what exactly the company does and what the role you are interviewing for entails. Its also good to know who your interviewer is and what their role is in the company. 2. Dress smartly: Although people say you shouldnt judge a book by its cover, its likely that a lot of people do to some extent and the way you present yourself for an interview can often reflect your general attitude towards the job. So make sure you present yourself smartly and dress your best  to prove that you are serious about landing the role. 3. Be punctual: Turning up late will only reflect badly on you, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get there. If you are not familiar with the location, plan your route ahead of the day, or even do a practice journey so you know where youre going and how much time you need to give yourself. Arriving 15 minutes early is recommended as it shows youre dedicated and have good time management skills. 4. Turn your phone off: It wouldnt look very professional if your phone were to go off mid-interview, so make sure you have switched it off before going in to avoid disturbances or distractions. 5. Give a firm handshake: A firm handshake will demonstrate confidence, however dont go overboard,  there is a happy medium between a limp handshake and one that could potentially leave your interviewer with an injury! 6. Flash a smile: Dont underestimate the power of being friendly. By smiling and making eye contact, you will come across as more approachable and it will help to make a connection with your interviewer. 7. Control your body language: Body language is important in an interview, as it can give away a lot about how you are feeling. Make sure you sit up straight and maintain eye contact, as it will prove that you are interested and your full focus is on your interviewer. Slouching or glancing around the room can indicate a lack of interest and your interviewer may not think you are serious about the job. 8. Take  notes: Jot down everything that you think may be important in your interview. Not only is it good reference for you after the interview, but it will show that you are paying attention to everything your interviewer is saying and have a genuine interest in the role. 9. Bring  a copy of your CV: Although its likely that your interviewer will have a copy of your resume to hand for the interview, its a good idea to take up-to-date copies of your CV with you, for yourself and your interviewer. You can then refer to it throughout your interview, when discussing previous experiences and achievements. 10. Ask questions: An interview should be a two way exchange, so its essential that you ask questions of your own. Prepare a list of questions before you go, as well as asking questions that pop into your head throughout the  conversation. Top image: Shutterstock RELATED: 5 Essential Tips for Interview Success

Compelling Resume Example for College Student to Use for Writing The First Job Application

Compelling Resume Example for College Student to Use for Writing The First Job Application Compelling Resume Example for College Student to Use for Writing The First Job Application This post has been originally published on April 9, 2018 and has been extensively revised and updated on April 17th, 2019.Sometime during your senior year of college, you’ll start the process of applying for your first ever, entry-level job. Even before then, you may send out your application to take part in important paid internships, or obtain other work experience relevant to your chosen career path.As you begin seeking your first job, your resume is one of the first challenges that you’ll have to tackle. How do you represent yourself as being qualified when you don’t have years of work-related experience? Here are some tips for doing just that. Keep reading, we’ve also included a resume example for college students below. Essential Resume Writing Tips for College StudentsAs a college student, you need to approach your resume writing a little differently than someone already working and looking to change their job or career path. You should try to put more emphasis not o nly on your work history but also on your educational experience too. It can be difficult to demonstrate your skills to someone when you haven’t got a lengthy work history, but highlighting your experience of any volunteer work that you have undertaken as well as any relevant extra-curricular activities that you think would help add value to your resume will certainly help.Applying for a job in a specific field? Check out additional resume examples for different professions!Emphasize AcademicsAnyone hiring a college student for an entry-level position is going to expect their resume to lean heavily on academics. This is perfectly acceptable. Don’t hesitate to include your achievements, your GPA, and any volunteer or research work you did that helped you to develop relevant skills and experience. Of course, it is perfectly acceptable to include any internships or externships as work experience. Why Extra-Curricular Activities Are ImportantYou may be wondering if you should include any extra-curricular activities on your college resume. After all, would a potential new employer really be that interested to know about these things? The answer to this question is ‘YES’.You should include your extra-curricular activities simply because you may have very little actual work experience to backup your resume with. Doing activities outside of the college environment can show a potential employer that you have good skills and abilities to bring to the role.Whether you spent time as part of a club or sporting group, did some volunteering work or walked and took care of your neighbors’ dogs, you would have developed some good interpersonal skills, prioritizing and organizational skills that can be very valuable. You should also mention any examples where you took on a leadership role. If you managed or organized a club or a team, you can demonstrate that you have the ability to lead. This shows an employer that you would be able to handle more responsibility in your role in the future.Focus on Accomplishment and Skills Development in Work Experience SectionWhile it is important to include any relevant work experience or jobs that you have done, don’t forget that any sort of work experience can be beneficial to mention here too. You pick up all sorts of soft and hard skills from the work that you do. So even if you held down a job that isn’t directly related to the post you are after, if you learned some valuable transferable skills from doing the job that will come in handy in your new role â€" list them! When jotting down this section, focus on detailing two things.First, explain the work you did in terms of your accomplishments. For example, if you worked in a fast food restaurant don’t state that you mopped floors and wiped counters. Instead, mention that you maintained high standards of safety and cleanliness without the need for direction or supervision. Next, list the skills that you gained from the jobs you had. Even if your wo rk was limited to working in retail, at restaurants, or at other jobs common among college students chances are you learned customer service skills, how to answer a business phone properly, basic computer skills, etc. You may have even developed leadership skills during research projects or at work.Pay Close Attention to Spelling and GrammarThis is true for every job seeker, but even more so for college students. You may be facing some unfair bias that as a young person you aren’t capable of professionalism, or have sufficient work ethic. Silence those future critics by submitting a well-written resume with impeccable spelling, grammar, and formatting.Make sure you edit your resume more than once. In fact you should edit, edit, and edit again! Get someone to proofread your resume carefully for you or make use of a grammar checker such as Grammarly. Having a fresh pair of eyes look over your resume will give you a chance to pick up on any missed typos that your brain doesn’t see. Use Action WordsYour college resume isn’t the place to be modest or reserved about your talents. You need to make yourself stand out from all the other generic applications coming through from others. You can do this by using strong action verbs to make a more powerful impression.Wording your resume with action verbs will help to make your experiences sound more dynamic and responsible. This will help your resume to look more energetic to the eye and make you stand out better than an applicant using a passive or modest voice.Hence, avoid the weak words like ‘did’ or ‘went’. Instead use power words like built, researched, developed, planned, and led. While on the subject of wording your resume, remember to quantify your statements wherever possible. Break up the text with numbers to better demonstrate your achievements. For example, rather than say that you volunteered as a cashier in a visitor center, instead say that you helped between 80 to 100 customers per day, handling cash sales and customer queries, in a busy gift shop within a popular visitor center.Add a Great Cover LetterA good resume should be paired with a great cover letter. Your cover letter will detail your enthusiasm and interest for the job. You can also mention your availability, and desire to schedule an interview. When In Doubt, Use A Resume TemplateEven if you take on-board all of the above tips, it can still be difficult to create your first resume layout. You will reduce stress and preserve your memory. The following tips will help you stay in shape and take care of your health. Exercise regularly Everyone understands the importance of exercise. However, very few find time in their busy schedules to go for a morning run or to the gym. If you have been ignoring exercise, it is about time you dust off your gym bag. A great way to get back into exercising is by downloading a fitness app like 30 Days Fitness Challenge that is full of exercises and routines you can do anywhere. Moreover, you can stay healthy by walking or riding a bike to work instead of driving. Get enough sleep Your body needs adequate rest to replenish its energy reserves. Therefore, avoid working past bedtime or drinking coffee; it will hinder you from getting quality sleep. Maintain the same sleeping and waking up time for better rest. Eat healthily You need to cut back on junk food and more processed foods and make more healthy choices. It is essential to nourish your body with complete and balanced diets. Therefore, take a healthy portion of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and mineral salts every day. Instead of snacking on junk foods, eat fruits and healthy vegetables. Practice yoga Yoga is not just a form of exercise; it relaxes your body and relieves stress. Taking a few minutes to practice yoga daily, keeps you in excellent shape, and keeps your mind happy. Limit alcohol consumption Alcohol and other drugs are not good for your wellbeing. Apart from destroying your liver, they leave your body dehydrated. Moreover, excessive use of alcohol deprives your body of quality sleep and rest. Drink water Your body needs to be hydrated at all times. Therefore, you should take water everywhere to drink whenever you are thirsty. Water is essential in removing germs from your body. You can also improve its taste with cucumber or lemon. Take probiotics Probiotics are live bacteria found in food supplements. The bacteria are effective in fighting harmful pathogens, aiding in digestion, and generating vitamins. Yogurt and kefir are familiar sources of probiotics. Spend time outdoors Spending a few hours outdoors is beneficial for your physical and mental health. It relaxes your mind and keeps your body healthy. Take care of your health! Keeping your body in excellent shape is vital for your health. The journey might be tough when you start. Who knew that 2010 would be the year I.... Career Coach JobJenny

Who knew that 2010 would be the year I.... Career Coach JobJenny ...thunk up and launched a brand-new blog and online business? ...got engaged? ...married the man of my dreams who, just two years earlier, seemed like a hopeless (major) crush? ...went from being the mother of one to mother of three amazing (and insanely energetic)mini-people? ...met dozens of remarkable people in search of their dream jobs? ...wrote a book (OK, well, almost... it's nearly done!)? ...got a bunch of new grey hair (seriously... I do not accept)? ...realized once and for all that I have officially found my career passion? I could not have imagined that 2010 would look like this had I tried. I am amazed, grateful and very, very happy (ok, not so much about the grey hair, but all the rest.) And I want to shout from the rooftops one crucial message to anyone who may be floundering, stuck, bewildered orfeeling nearhopelessness as we round out the year. IT IS POSSIBLE IF YOU BELIEVE IT IS POSSIBLE. I have floundered. I have been stuck. I have had more than a few loopholes in my day. But the one thing I have categorically refused to do is believe that I have to accept what life serves up. I'm going to spend the next two weeks roughing out a game plan for 2011. Sure, I'll keep it flexible so that I may grab onto the unexpected opportunities and joysI meet along the way. But I'm authoring 2011. Please, please, give yourself the gift of time to do the same. Make this your year. Author it. Believe in it. Serve yourself up the year of your dreams. Cheers. Photo by the fabulous Steph Barcenas

It Takes 10000 Hours to Become a Master - Have You Done Yours

It Takes 10000 Hours to Become a Master - Have You Done Yours We all think we know about those instant success stories. People who wake up with one brilliant idea that not only changes the world in impressive ways but makes them billionaires overnight. It’s hard to believe… and maybe we shouldn’t believe it at all. When we hear one of those stories, it’s more likely that we’re not witnessing someone bursting on the scene out of nowhere, but, rather, the result of that person having put in the “magic number” of hours that lead to that kind of achievement in his or her chosen field. evalAccording to author Malcolm Gladwell, and first expressed in his book “Outliers,” it takes 10,000 hours of dedication, diligence, and practice at anything to become a master of it. Whether that’s twenty hours a week for ten years, forty hours a week for five years, or non-stop application for as long as it takes. The premise applies to pretty much any endeavor, assuming you have the basic qualifications and the competency to pursue it. Naturally, someone who is height-challenged is never going to be a pro basketball star regardless of how many hours he works at it, and someone who can’t carry a tune can practice until she collapses and she’ll never perform at the Metropolitan Opera. But realistically pick your spot, put in your time, and you can master it.How this applies to your business career is simple.1. Set Your GoalDecide what you want to achieve, and then make a plan to accomplish it. First, here are some questions to ask yourself:Is it realistic? Optimism is a great quality, but if you don’t have the basic qualifications to do a job, dreaming won’t make it happen. If a job requires a great deal of travel, for example, are you willing to spend a lot of time away from your family? Are you able to pick up and move if the best opportunity for the career you want is centered in another city or state?Does it complement your interests? A job may sound good on paper, but do you know what it entails day to day? Havin g a title doesn’t mean you’re going to like the work. We’re talking about your life here. What do you want to spend it doing? What are its long-term prospects? Research the market for the career you want. Is it a growing field? Is there high demand for people who can do the job or is there a glut of qualified professionals doing the same work?evalWill it provide the financial rewards you need? People select careers for a lot of different reasons, but at bottom, your job needs to support you during your working life and provide resources for your retirement. It’s not a small consideration.2. Upgrade Your EducationNo matter what your current full time job is, prepare for your next one by enrolling in an online MBA program to broaden your scope of knowledge and give you new tools for effective communication, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. Not only will it hone your skills and add to your 10,000 hours, having an MBA on your resume will allow you to compete for a greater range of opportunities and give you an edge in getting where you want to go.3. Continue to Develop YourselfWhile you’re putting in your hours on the task at hand, search out opportunities to learn more and do more. Contribute as much as you can to team efforts. Ask for more responsibility. Bring new ideas to the table. Study what’s going on in your industry and related fields, and keep current on what’s happening in your own organization.4. Prepare for the Next StepevalMost goals are achieved in stages. While you’re toting up those 10,000 hours, prepare yourself for moving ahead:Record your accomplishments. Keep track of all your successes in terms of sales figures, project results, or whatever other ways you can quantify the record of value you’ve brought to your employer. Those are what count when you’re in line for an upgrade where you are or a new position elsewhere.Promote yourself. Let people know what you can do, not by bragging, but by sharing informatio n that makes you look good. Everyone else is doing the same thing, so you’re letting yourself down if you don’t self-promote, too.Enlist your boss as a mentor. Make sure he or she knows you’ve prepared yourself to move on up, and ask for advice and guidance. Any good boss will want to see you succeed.
